Captain’s Log
No matter when Easter falls in March or April, I think I have always seen it as a changing of the seasons from winter to spring. This year in the UK we have the added bonus of the start of British Summer Time coinciding with Easter Sunday!
The changing seasons remind us of the constant promise of hope that lies at the heart of our faith. It is a hope not born of our own efforts, but rather a gift that springs from the transformative power of Jesus' resurrection.
This weekend, we have the opportunity to once more explore the depths of despair and to ascend to the heights of new creation.
In any whodunnit, there comes a moment of clarity as the last piece of the jigsaw falls into place and the culprit is revealed. In the same way, Jesus' resurrection is the pivotal event that draws together God's story. Our faith reaches its full meaning in the light of Christ's victory over sin and death. Much of what Jesus commands us to do as his followers can only be understood in the context of his resurrection power.
This Easter, just as the disciples on the road to Emmaus experienced the transition from the sunset of despair to the sunrise of understanding, we are invited to turn our gaze from death to resurrection. We are invited to take the transformative journey once more, receiving for ourselves the ancient promise that through Jesus' resurrection, all sadness will be reversed and a future of hope can be realised.
Take some time this Easter weekend to reflect on what it means to truly live in the hope of the resurrection. Our longing for spirituality, joy, justice, relationships, and beauty are only fully satisfied in the new creation sparked by Jesus' resurrection. We are challenged to embody this Easter message by overcoming the sin in our lives, and continuing to see our world through the lens of God's new day.
As we share the powerful truths of Easter this weekend, I invite each one of you to consider one practical way you can live out the resurrection hope in your daily life. Perhaps it's through a renewed commitment to forgive, a conscious effort to serve others, or simply a decision to approach each day with an expectation of God's renewing work in your life.
This Easter, let's be inspired and align our lives with the resurrection power that raised Christ from the dead. Together, we will share in this journey towards hope and the promise of a new creation.
This week on the Battle Drill Daily Devotional Podcast, we focus on living our lives in the power of the resurrection. Each weekday we share hope and encouragement as we read and study the Bible together.
- Monday 1 April - The Power and Significance of Jesus' Resurrection
- Tuesday 2 April - The Reality of a New Creation: Embracing the Hope and Power of the Resurrection
- Wednesday 3 April - From Despair to Hope: The Emmaus Walk
- Thursday 4 April - Living as a New Creation in Christ: Embracing the Power of the Resurrection
- Friday 5 April - Living a Resurrection Shaped Life
There's a new episode of Battle Drill Devotional every Monday through Friday. You can pick a copy of this week’s up from Reception. Click on the link - https://linktr.ee/battlefieldresources - to listen, watch or subscribe to the podcast. You can even listen to it three times a day on Salvationist Radio!
In Christ.

SUNDAY 31 March (Easter Day) – SABBATH PRAYER
Let’s live!
‘The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you.’ (Romans 8:11 NLT)
Happy Easter! May you know the resurrection life of Jesus filling you and overflowing from you today. May it renew you deep inside. May it be your motivation and your energy, as you live out your faithful response to God, and may it cause your habits of faithfulness to be shot through with joy.
(Lyndall Bywater, UKI Boiler Room Team)
MONDAY 1 April – SHARING THE GOOD NEWS
Easter Music Course (1-5 April)
Christians connected to The Salvation Army have come together from all over the territory to share in a week of music making, fellowship, Bible study and fun. Please pray for the music that will be learned – that it will challenge and bless those who spend time looking at it. May the lyrics and music speak to them in a way that is timely and needed.
(Stephanie Lamplough, Assistant Director, Music and Creative Arts)
TUESDAY 2 April – SERVING AND CARING
Pioneer focus: Deptford
Soul Community Deptford is a network committed to co-creating places of healing in the community. Some people are Christians, but most are not; they all find some kind of family and meaning through the various spaces we hold, such as our choir that meets in the local pub. We also hold walking meditations, and lead a monthly Christian meditation online. Pray for wounds to heal, for wind to return to the sails and for new creativity as our team grows. Pray too for wisdom for the way forward.
(Dave Cotterill, Pioneer Development Worker)
WEDNESDAY 3 April – GROWING IN FAITH
Belongings musical
The cast of Belongings will be performing this new musical for the fifth time this week, when they visit the Easter Music Course. Pray that they will be able to recreate the performance with the same love and enthusiasm as when they last performed it two months ago. Pray that the storyline will touch people, and that God will talk to them through the musical, bringing joy and comfort.
(Stephanie Lamplough, Assistant Director, Music and Creative Arts)
THURSDAY 4 April – INTERNATIONAL SALVATION ARMY
Bangladesh Territory
We pray today for the Bangladesh Territory, under the leadership of Territorial Commander Lieut-Colonel Elizabeth Nelson, Chief Secretary Major Gabriel Dewri and Territorial Secretary for Women’s Ministries Major Chaya Dewri. In a country which has experienced many natural disasters in recent decades, we pray that God will equip his people to bring comfort and hope.
(Lyndall Bywater, UKI Boiler Room Team)
FRIDAY 5 April – JUSTICE AND RECONCILIATION
Anti-Trafficking and Modern Slavery: Direct Delivery
God is in the restoration business. God wants to strengthen people and give them back their dignity. Pray for our ‘direct delivery’, the safe houses and outreach teams who support survivors to be safe and protected at home and at work. Pray for survivors who are looking to seek justice for what has happened to them, and for reconciliation with their families and communities.
(Major Estelle Blake and the Anti-Trafficking and Modern Slavery Team)
SATURDAY 6 April – CARE FOR CREATION
Valuing our fellow creatures
‘God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.’ (Genesis 1:25)
Did you know that about 70 billion land animals are killed for food every year? We can fall into the misconception that humans are the only ones who feel emotions and experience suffering, and this has led to an inhumane and unjust system of production which impacts us all, especially our ‘other-than-human’ family.
O God, increase our sense of fellowship with all living things. You gave the Earth to them too. Help us to value their presence and give thought to how our choices impact their welfare.
Action: Could you consider reducing the amount of meat in your diet – even becoming vegetarian or vegan? If you do buy meat, make a commitment to ensure that it is ethically farmed.
(Major Vivienne Prescott, Forest of Dean Corps)
Boiler Room – Powerhouse.
You are welcome to join us for our Boiler Room Prayer Meeting every Friday between 9:30am-10:00am in-person in the Prayer Room. I will be providing subjects each week for us to pray for, based on our mission and ministry and what is going on around us.
There is a Prayer Requests box on Reception (along with Prayer Request notepads) for use by corps members and hopefully, others who come into the Hall. We will pray those requests on a Friday morning too (unless they are marked Confidential for the CO only). Please do take advantage of this when it becomes available. We need to pray for each other! (as I know many of us do).
Do you have a prayer request? Please email us, use the prayer request box on our reception desk in The Hub, or speak to a member of the leadership team.
Our Christian faith encourages us to do what we can to support those in need in our community:
